 Belgium

KWAK 8% is named after Pauwel Kwak who first brewed this gourmet beer in 1791. The family-owned Brewery Bosteels located in Buggenhout, Belgium, brews Kwak in the zuur Flanders style producing a dry, assertively tart beer. Kwak has a slightly sweet flavour, a fruity aftertaste, and a hint of bitterness. Top-fermented, it has a rich, copper colour with a creamy head. The distinctive glass originated from coachmen needing a way to enjoy beer since Napoleonic Code forbade them sharing a drink with the passengers. Kwak developed this glass so the coachmen could remain seated yet hang the glass on the coach and enjoy the rich beer too. (8% )ABV)

LIEFMANS KRIEK & LIEFMANS FRAMBOZEN 4.5% abv Splendid fruit beers from a special brewery. Kriek is cherry flavoured. Once a year whole fruit is added to a year old brown ale and left to mature for another year. The result is a wonderful sweet and sour beer that for once does deserve the accolade - unique The sister beer, Frambozen is raspberry flavoured and has a more delicate sweeter flavour. Still dark with real depth of flavour.

Duvel 8.5% is a high fermentation beer that is still brewed today based on the craftsmanship of yesteryear. Duvel is made using the finest barley malt and hops, with no additives or preservatives. Duvel is not pasteurised and so is entirely pure and natural. Like champagne, secondary fermentation and long maturation occur in the bottle, giving the beer its highly distinctive taste

Leffe - at present, we have two versions - a “Blonde” 6.6% lager style Beer and the “Bruin –6.5% similar to a Scottish export style beer

St. Bernardus Tripel ABV: 7.5 As the name implies triple brewed to bring out its true weight and character. Unusually delicate for such a strong brew, however, with a maltiness that somehow combines with vanilla and a citrus quality reminiscent of green apples.

Hoegaarden Grand Cru 8% and Forbidden Fruit. 9% Everyone now knows about Hoegaarden Wit but less of these two. Grand Cru is brewed using barley rather than wheat and the resultant brew is stronger flavoured and beautifully astringent and robust. Forbidden Fruit is just as it sounds - a beautiful deep colour with a fruitiness developing in the back of the palate.

ORVAL 5.5% Produces only one beer in a skittle shaped bottle. Legend has it that a Countess Matilda of Tuscany lost her gold ring in a local lake and pledged that if it were restored to her she would thank God by building an abbey. The ring was brought to the surface by a trout and the abbey is there. Orval  6.2%abv Six different malts, English and German hops. Triple fermentation. A very dry herby beer ideal as an aperitif.

ACHOUFFE Comes in a wine sized bottle and should be treated just like that! Started as a hobby in the 1980's and has carved a niche for itself in the export market and at home, inBelgium, where beer is a serious business. The red hatted, bearded gnome gives the brewery its name and is something of a local celebrity, and appears on every item of promotional material. There are two main ): LA CHOUFFE 8.0% abv A hazy yellow gold complex beer in a serious 75cl bottle. Coriander and hops give stunning but delectable touch to the aroma and palate McCHOUFFE 8.0% abv Another medal winning beer from this very innovative brewery. This was inspired by a Scottish friend - darker in colour and with more aroma. The gnome (chouffe) is wearing a kilt now!

.De Koninck - I’ve always enjoyed de Konink beers from Antwerp. Brewed as a top-fermented beer -similar to a Scottish cask Ale with a tawny body and a richness melded with a touch of fruit at the back

CHIMAY The biggest and best known Trappist brewery and also the first to brew commercially. The three beers are named after the colour of their caps. Chimay Red 7.0%abv Smooth and mellow with a light copper colour Chimay White 8.0%abv Golden coloured in the triple style with a delicate balance of bitter and fruity flavours. Chimay Blue 9.0%abv A dark strong ale characterized by its full flavour and port-like aroma.

top                                     Germany

Schneider Weisse - 5% the classic Wheat beer - often described as the “Champagne of Wheat Beers”. Schneider is probably the “gentlest” of the Weisse beers, with a light, crispness in the palette and less of the astringent sharpness of some Weisse Beers.

Aventinus - a strong (8%) dark beer from the same brewery as the Schneider Weisse. As with Schneider Weisse, Aventinus is a Weisse beer but with the added distinction of a blackcurrant fruitiness in the finish which makes it a pleasure despite its drinking “weight”.

Erdinger “Pikantus” -At 7.3% , this specialty wheat beer has a considerably higher alcohol content than othe varieties produced by Erdinger. The dark bock beer owes its sharp and full flavour to the use of selected dark wheat and barley malts and a significantly longer maturing process.

Augustiner Dunkel - “Dunkel” is a dark, strong, rich-tasting beer with a slight “smoke” in the palate. Augustiner Edelstoff - 5.5% on the other hand is a bright, crisp Pilsner style beer with a fresh, almost lemon-citrous quality to it.

Maisel’s Weisse - 5.7% another wheat beer with a slightly stronger astringent palate. Maisel’s offers a stronger Weisse experience than most others with a bright, zesty palate and the satisfying bite and fruitiness expected of the genre.

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier - 4.8% a smoked beer with a distinctive palate from kilning the malts over beechwood chips. The result is a stunning, flavoursome beer like no other. Often likened to “smoked bacon” and delicious either by itself or with good cold meats and cheeses.

Paulaner Weisse - 5.6% Paulaner is one of the larger German breweries and, there is evidence of the existence of the Paulaner brewery since 1634. It gets its unmistakable character from the specially cultured top-fermentation yeast: Light and flavourful, with slightly higher effervescence and unmistakably abundant aroma. Paulaner Oktoberfest - 5.7%The original Oktoberfest beer- golden yellow colour and light, hoppy malt - is brewed especially for the most famous and largest public festival in the world.

top                                     Poland

Zwiec - 5.0% a classic Lager from a country wrongly in the shadow of Czech Pilseners. Zwiec is a bright, crisp lager with a satisfying richer, maltier quality to it than the colour would indicate.

top                                 Czech Republic

Zlatopramen Premium - pale lager The premium beer of the brewery, an outstanding light lager beer which has exceeded regional boundaries for decades, famous for its constant quality, golden colour, medium body, fine hoppy aroma and pronounced bitterness.

Breznak - pale lager A classic Czech lager beer of the Pilsner type noted for its pure golden colour, clean hoppy aroma and fine bitterness. Made from pure natural spring water, best quality Saaz hops and the finest malt , Breznak has become for centuries much sought-after by discerning beer drinkers both in the Czech Republic and abroad. Mr. Zippich - a postmaster of Velke Brezno from early 20th century - lent his face to the brewery for a lifelong rent in the form of 20 pints of beer a week.

Black Regent - 4.5% distinctive because “Black Regent” is actually a black lager. Brewed with three different malts, Black Regent has a treacle and figs taste to it with none of the interesting side effects!

Pilsener Urquell - 5.0% literally the “original” Pilsener and still an outstanding combination of traditional Pilsener crispness and lightness coupled to a sweetness in the finish. Brewed for over 600 years.

Gambrinus - 4.8% a maltier version of a Pilsener, Gambrinus takes its name from the patron of drinking in Belgium, Jan Primus. The brewery has been in existence for at least 400 years producing a malty, refreshing Pilsener lager beer that is finally gaining recognition again over here.
